What do you do?

Some folks have asked me what it is I do for a living. When I say I work for the Florida Senate, they tend to give me a look of "Oh wow!" So let me dive into explaining what it is I do...

"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."
-Confucius

I currently work for the Secretary of the Senate as a Journal Writer/Research Assistant. Basically my duties include anything from proofreading any piece of work, website, bill, etc. to preparing official documents for a Senator, to being a part of a team of amazing women that records and compiles every detail Senators discuss during Sessions.

I love my job! I really do! I've been here for a year now and I can honestly say this is not where I pictured myself with a degree in Marketing, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I have learned so much about the political realm of things, proper writing techniques, and the history of why we do the things we do. It's just cool.

A journal is a volume (or two sometimes) of each day that Senators meet, whether it's in the chambers or in a committee meeting, during Sessions. We, as a team, rotate and usually two members sit in the chambers (front and center mind you) recording what is said and done during that time in there. Also, these recordings are hand-written. Later, we will go back and input the information into our system that generates the text for us to proofread. Some interesting stuff going on here!

As stated earlier, I also assist in researching information for reports, proofreading changes made to documents or websites, and putting together information that may be submitted either to Senators and their constituents, or the public.

So there you have it... a glimpse into my career. I love talking about what it is I do because I enjoy coming to work each day! I can honestly say I learn something new every day here. A note to my young folks... Get involved with your local and state government. This does affect you and you, as a citizen, should want to be in the know of what could possibly change the way you do things each day. Take it from a girl who never had an interest in politics or really cared who was running at the local and state level {that's so embarassing to admit!}. It will be worth your while and your future to know what is going on in your community.

I hope ya'll have an amazing day!

  1. That's so interesting! I minored in political science and the class I had to take on state and local government was one of my favorites by far. I feel like most people are totally clueless when it comes to this area of our government, but it's just as important as the national government
