3 Southern Girls: Blog Changes + New Beginnings

Happy happy happy Thursday ladies and gents!! Thursday's are so splendid because it means we're just that much closer to awesome sauce Friday's! Holla....

Welcome back, or if this is your first time joining in, welcome all around to 3 Southern Girls' Throwback Thursday Link-up. I'm not going to bore you with the deets right now (that's down below - be sure to link-up ya'll!) but I am going to jump into my #tbt bit for today.

This here bloggy is a dear love of mine. I can come here to share my thoughts and experiences with some unlikely friends that I never thought I would have the pleasure of meeting. Also, it has been a great way for my family and friends to be able to keep up with me and the happenings in my life. I'm a busy gal ya'll!

Over the past several days, I have felt like coming here was work now. Don't get me wrong, I know sometimes you have to work at something you enjoy. But it got to the point where I realized that I was now coming here to post something because I knew people were expecting it. Family, friends, blog friends were expecting to see a Southern Komfort Blog post on their Bloglovin feed each morning.

And that became such a daunting task to fulfill.

Thus, I decided to go back to my roots. Go back to why I started blogging. Like I said earlier, this blog is a place to come and share my life. With that being said, SoKo will still be around and I will still be checking in and posting things to this corner of the interwebs. Just not every single day of the week (with the exceptions of weekends - I stopped doing that a long time ago). I want to be able to enjoy coming here with all sorts of great things to tell you guys! I didn't want this blog to become mundane.

So, hang with me if ya'll still want to. Or don't. Either way, this blog was designed for me to share the beauty in this world with all you lovelies, so you can take it or leave it.

As far as the "New Beginnings" part of the title goes, I met the sweetest gal last night at dinner! A good friend of mine and Hunter's has been dating this gem of girl for awhile now. They did the long distance thing and she was finally able to move down here in July and start their lives here together as a couple. She is such a sweetheart, so bright in every way, and ya'll, she speaks sarcasm!! When Hunter and I left dinner last night, the first thing I said was, "I absolutely love her!!"

Jessie, if you're reading this, it was truly a pleasure meeting you and I can't wait to see where this friendship thang goes. Welcome to the south sister! And always remember, bless someone's heart.

3 Southern Girls Throwback Thursday: All about Spenser Lynn...

Today is quite the special day. Today is this lovely gal's birthday!

Spenser is one of my only friends that I can truly call a sister. See we go way back...

Spenser used to date one of my brothers. Long story short, my brother's an idiot and let the best thing that's ever happened to him go. But hey, that's water over/under the bridge and we all still love Spenser. Let's see... How about I make a list of all of the wonderful things I love about Spenser in honor of her birthday:
  • Her hair - It's always perfect!
  • Her smile - It's a sure-fire smile that will make you smile.
  • Her athleticism - Girl got skeeeelllssss!
    • Fun fact: Spenser was an FSU bat girl (Google it) for 3 years I believe. Correct if I'm wrong Spinn.
    • Fun fact: She's currently the varsity volleyball coach at her alma mater high school.
  • Her love for her family - It runs so deep!
  • Her heart - Spinn (this is her nickname) has one of the biggest hearts I've ever come across. Her passion for people, kids in particular, is contagious. Her heart for God is unwavering.

Spenser, you have been nothing but a joy in my life. You'll always be a "sister" to me (and Erin). Thank you for all the shenanigans, beach trips, sushi dates, moving parties, laughs, and so many memories. Thank you for letting me marry one of your bestest guy friends and supporting us from the get go - even though it was a little weird at first for you, ha!

I love you Spenser Lynn and I hope you have a fabulous birthday!

That stud muffin above is Hunter's best friend and groomsman, and Spenser's boyfriend

3 Southern Gals Link-Up: What awk-sauce teenagers have taught me

I had mentioned last Friday that I would fill ya'll in on our youth group situation. Hunter and I have been youth leaders for a couple years now and have absolutely loved every minute of it! People think we're rather strange for wanting to spend time with teenagers. My reasons:
  1. You were weird once too.
  2. In their most awkward and vunerable times in life, the last thing anybody needs to do is toss these teens to the side to let them "work it out themselves." Give me a break.
So when Hunter and I found out that a committee had been formed to find the interim youth pastor, and had been formed with the intentions to not include us, I was furious. I wept, I wanted to shake those people, and I prayed. I absolutely prayed for our kids.

In this post originally, I wanted to just lay it all out there. I wanted to smear the sin that is going on within that church for all to see, because the good Lord knows that these folks have never had to answer to their transgressions.

But then I realized (I fully believe God was showing me), that that is not who I am. That is not who Jesus was or is. So I will not be smearing their sins but rather I will be praying for them. Hunter and I will be moving forward because we know that God has big plans for us! We know that our time with this church and youth group has come to an end - and THAT'S OKAY!!

It's okay for change.

I was inspired by my dear friend, Sara Beth, and her post the other day. Fun fact: Sara Beth and her husband were youth leaders with us. They're also the one leading the way in ministry in our community. She talks about what being a youth leader has taught her over the last several years. With mine and Hunter's leaving of the youth program, I felt it only necessary to look back on what these amazing teenagers taught me. And yes, teenagers can be amazing if you give them the chance:
  • They're going to be weary of you at first. Hey, these kids are used to people giving up on them.
  • Be transparent - when they see that you have flaws, you become their greatest source of hope.
  • Don't parent them - that's not your job.
  • While you're not parenting them, still don't let them do as they please. Guide them as a holy friend would.
  • Let them get to know you personally - how many siblings do you have? What did you want to be when you were their age? What did you eat for lunch? Teens crave relationships.
  • Always hug them. Whether they want it or not, give them the biggest hug you can because for many, that's all they ever get in their lives.
  • Understand that these teens come from all walks of life. Be respectful of their situations and don't always assume that their home lives are even remotely good.
  • Love unconditionally. Love as Jesus loved. These teenagers are the future of the community.
  • Be honest - I had a youth ask if Hunter and I are living together (not married). I answered yes, and we went into a long discussion of "Just because you live together, doesn't mean you have to have sex. It doesn't mean that you have to act like married people already. And yes, just because you live together doesn't mean that we don't have our problems too."
  • Go to their sporting events, graduations, plays... Be a part of these kids lives!!
Those are just a few of many things that we have learned from our teenagers and I wanted to share them with ya'll on this #tbt link-up. We have loved the memories that were created and the relationships that have been formed.

And these poor kids, they think they'll never have to deal with us again. Boy are ya'll wrong! Luckily, we're actually going to be a part of these kids lives even more, but in a different way. Rather than being confined to the walls of the church to only see them, we're planning on partnering with them to go out into the community to do ministry. We will be at those games, recitals, and graduations. FBCQ youth - it has only just begun my friends.

3 Southern Girls Link-Up: 8-legged freaks

Image MapI've mentioned before that I am deathly afraid of spiders. SO afraid that I've nearly wrecked, streaked out of a shower in my birthday suit for the world to see, and I've even called Hunter crying hysterically because the little 8-legged freak was on the inside of the windshield while I was driving.

And these little turds are never small. Nooooo.... they're the kinds that would eat an entire human if I gave them the chance.

With that being said, I decided to dig in the old blogger files and find that ever-amusing story of my encounter with an 8-legged freak. Ugh, even typing this makes my skin crawl.

---------------------------------------------------------

Ya'll...
I have a confession to make. If you don't already know, I'm deathly afraid of spiders. I'm talking screaming, running for my life, I wouldn't make it in Fear Factor deathly afraid. Put me in a room with roaches... Yea they're gross, but I can handle it. I might even name the little guys.

But spiders. No sir. I don't do them.

I have no shame in admitting that I've called Hunter before, crying, because a spider was on the inside of my windshield while I was driving. It was absolutely traumatic.

I've always said God has a funny sense of humor. Man oh man, He sure was messing with me yesterday.

After leaving work, being the good girlfriend I am, I decided to drive to our Bass Pro here locally to exchange a shirt for Hunter. Traffic was awful so we weren't really moving. When pulling up to a red light, I see something brown skitter across the back, top of my steering wheel (by all the speedometer, gas gauge, etc.).

And I spot him. A tarantula of a spider. Okay, maybe not a tarantula, but my God he wasn't a little bitty fella. At this point, I may or may not have let out a whimper, squeal, ohhh maahhh gahhhhh sound. I'm pretty sure folks around me were videotaping me at this point.

I immediately reach over to my passenger seat to arm myself to go in for the kill. What do I grab? Not a shoe. Not a rolled magazine. No, I grab my Sweet Baby Ray's sauce from my lunch bag. I wasn't thinking at this point people and it was the first thing my hand grabbed!

Once I grabbed my ever-faithful weapon, I turn back... And you guessed it. He's gone. Want to scare the turds out of someone deathly afraid of spiders? Let them see the spider, and lose the spider. That'll send any nerve-wrecked soul into panic mode.

So I did just that. I freaked. I immediately U-turn into our mall parking lot, park, and sat and watched. And waited. And searched. The little freak was gone!

At this point, I started praying. Yes, laugh away people. But I had to get home. And God's sense of humor got me into this; by golly I would pray my way out of it. So I bravely got back on the road. I may have flinched and/or screamed a few times on the way home when a hair brushed me. I was on high alert! I was constantly looking around my steering wheel, partly hoping to God he'd come out so I could just bludgeon it to death. The other part of me hoping he was burning on my motor because, let's be honest, I probably would've wrecked if he made an appearance.

I finally made it home, and still haven't found the spider. I considered taking the bus to work today. I thought about driving Hunter's truck to work. I even contemplated walking to work. But I put my big girl panties on, drove to work today, and made it fine. It was a tense ride to work I tell ya.

And no. I didn't make it to Bass Pro to exchange Hunter's shirt. Spider- 1 point. Kelly- 0 points. Spider wins.

If you haven't linked up with us yet, head on over to the Rules page to link-up! Hope to see ya'll there!

3 Southern Gals Link-Up: Our "Wedding Room"

As Hunter and I are getting closer and closer to our big day, it's always fun looking back at the pictures of our planning process. For example, with all of the wedding decorations coming together more and more, Hunter and I designated a room in our house to be the "wedding room."

Ladies, I did my absolute best to organize this room to be able to hold all of our decorations that we have been collecting over the last several months. Please feast your eyes on the goodies.

Recognize these?

It's a hot mess, and this isn't all of it. Some of our decorations are currently housed at my mother's house. As I look at these decorations though, they remind me of the day Hunter proposed and how unbelievably excited I was, and gives us so much hope of the coming days.

If you would like to join in on today's link-up, you can through here.

3 Southern Gals Link-Up: Let's talk music

So Hunter and I wrestled with this detail the most. Quite honestly, we just weren't sure how much we were willing to pay somebody to stand up front and play music from a laptop or Ipad at our reception.

All we kept thinking was, "We could do that for way cheaper."

Well, my mom encouraged us to "just check out" a DJ and see what kind of vibes we got. We met with a DJ last week and ya'll.... He. Is. Awesome! He's able to play all of the songs we are requesting for a price that other DJ's cannot compete with.

It really does help to know people. Because the DJ is good friends with the reception venue owners, and because he has done multiple events there, he was able to cut us a deal. I love me a good deal! We were instantly drawn to his vibrant personality - he's always smiling!

Just to give ya'll an idea of what type of music we're requesting (these are just a few of many on our list)...

source: Google

As for mine and Hunter's song for our first dance, we will be dancing to the song titled "My Kind of Woman/My Kind of Man" by Vince Gill and Patty Loveless. Do yourself a favor and go listen to the song on YouTube. I grew up listening to Vince Gill and a few years ago, my dad had this particular song playing over our speakers by the pool. Hunter immediately said, "If we get married, I want this to be our song. It's so good!" Little did he know, it is one of my most favorite songs by Vince Gill. It's funny how things work out, isn't it?

We're very excited, and relieved, that this detail is behind us. And that we actually were so blown away by this man's kindness to help us out that we just couldn't say no. So my advice to anybody looking/considering/questioning a DJ?

Find somebody that instantly clicks with you and your fiance. Hunter and I feel like that because we were able to relate on many things with the DJ, because we know mutual people, and because the guy is just a stand-up kind of man, it really helped make our decision easy.

Looks like we can check this task off of our wedding to-do list!

3 Southern Gals Link-Up + Our First Date

**To participate in this link-up, please visit Cat @ Yes Deer's page or Tela @ Sweet Southern T's page to join in. Due to technical malfunctions, the link-up has been removed from this blog. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

For being a full week after a short week last week, I have to say that it is keeping up the pace and flying right on by! I guess it helps to have busy days and many big changes coming in our lives - more on that next week.

Thursdays are always fun for me because I can spend a few moments looking back on some fond memories! Some are more fond than others, like mine and Hunter's first date. Ya'll, I was not the nicest person but don't hate me just yet! I'll explain...

A little over 3 years ago, in the month of June 2011, my brother and his very cute friend were staying at my parents house over the weekend to study and take the motorcycle course for the endorsement on their license. This cute friend and I struck up small conversations, just talking about their plans for the weekend, I was taking exams at the time for school, the weather. Ya'll know, small talk.

I thought nothing of it again (other than he was so stinkin cute!) until later that week. My brother used to race motocross and this cute friend had always wanted to see a race. So the following weekend my brother had a race scheduled and I felt it only necessary to invite this cute friend. I decided to give him my number for him to contact me so that once he got to the race, he could find us since my brother wouldn't have his phone on him.

Well that week leading up to the race, cute friend had asked me to spend some time with him a couple of times. I politely declined his offers and, ya'll, my honest to God reason was because I truly thought he had a girlfriend. I thought, "He is way too nice and kind of a person to not have a girl on his arm. I'm not going to be his fling!!" Oh how little did I know.

I finally sat down with my brother and asked him about this cute friend. I found out he was a bit younger than me - that's right ya'll, I'm a cougar (and proud of it!) - but he was also single. My brother encouraged me to give him a chance.

Sadly, my brother ended up not being able to race that weekend. But cute friend still had my numba. And I had remembered what my brother said and his blessing. So to make up for being such a meanie and turning him down constantly, I told him I would love to hang out with him that Friday night... Just as friends. Or so I thought.

He came and picked me up, took me to a movie that I had been wanting to see, and we honestly spent the rest of the night talking into the wee hours and learning sooo much about each other. That night, I realized talking to him was like talking to my best friend. He was so easy to talk to and so so kind.

He did try to hold my hand that night (in a very sweet way - he knew I had been through hell and back with my last relationship) but I had to be a big ole butt and not hold his hand. Actually, I kept scooting my hand away from his to see if he would work for it. You ain't gonna get it that easy son! Ha!

Yes, I did eventually hold his hand. I was just so blown away by his kindness and genuine nature.

I can remember that night like it was 5 minutes ago - what he wore, what we talked about, the songs we listened to and laughed at. I had no idea that that night would be my last first date.

And it was the best last first date I could have ever asked for!

3 Southern Gals Link-up

Welcome to another week of #throwbackthursday with the 3 Southern Gals!

Can I be real with ya'll this week? I can? Okay, great...

Hi, my name is Kelly. And I just got Twitter like... a few months ago. Ya'll, I honestly never understood the excitement behind Twitter, and still don't. Yea, it's great for the blog but.... Let's be honest. If I didn't have the blog, would I have a Twitter account?

Probably not.

Wooo, I'm glad I got that off my chest! In honor of all my previous doubt and lack of fascination with the Twitter bug, I decided I would share my very first tweet.

Did ya'll go check it out?? Wasn't it special?

Know what else ya'll should go check out? This link-up and the other 2 fabulous ladies that are hosting it with me! Seriously, all the cool kids are doing this link-up. Drink the kool-aid!

A side note friends: Sweet Mrs. Cat's computer and cord have decided to die altogether on her, and she hasn't been able to resurrect the little beast. Sadly, she won't be able to finish her love story this week but she will definitely be back next week with the goods. Still go check out her blog!

3 Southern Gals Throwback Thursday + Good Ole Jepster

It's another Thursday, and another day to look back on the good times. I couldn't help but to think back to when we first got our little rascal - Jep. What a hoot he was, and still is! Jep and my rescue pit, Manny, are just 2 peas in a pod. They honestly cannot get enough of each other.

Let's take a trip down memory lane to the day we got him, and the weeks after as he has continued to grow into the tall, lanky, goofy dog he is. In just a couple short weeks, he'll be 8 months old!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome back Y'all to another week with the 3 Southern Gals.
This Throwback Thursday Link Party has been such a blast.
This is our 4th week and we have met some amazing bloggers and read some incredible post.
As always thank you for sharing and linking up with us!!

So what  is so great about this link party?  Anyone can link up!!  You can share a post you wrote today that shares old pictures and/or stories...  But if you already have something else scheduled for today, or maybe you just found this link-up, no worries....link up an old blog post.  We just ask if you link up a previous blog posting, that it be older than a week old.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask one of us.

Before you link up please read and make sure you are following the party guidelines :)

The Rules are Simple:

1.  Make sure you are following ALL 3 of the Southern Gals Blogs.

Cat   //  Kelly  //   Tela

2.  Link up your throwback blog post.  This includes a post where you share old pictures and/or stories.  OR you may also share a blog post that was posted prior to last week.
In other words please do not link up to your blogs home page, a post you wrote this week that does not include something from the past.

3.  Please no giveaways, shops, or other linkups.
(as these would also not fall into the throwback category)

4.  Share our party button and/or link back to our party.

5. Don't just link and run...check our some other TBT post.

6.  HAVE FUN!!!

****NOTICE****

We want this to be a fun link up, so link up your post!!  Lets reminisce together.  All we ask if that if you link up, PLEASE follow ALL the rules.  We really do not want to delete links.  Honestly this is the last thing we want to do, but these link parities take a lot of our time an effort.  In return we just need for you to be respectful to our party and to others.  In the past linkups  we have had a few each week that have not followed all the rules.  Going forward we will have to delete any link that does not follow the party rules.

NOW LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED
