3 Southern Gals Link-Up: Let's talk music

So Hunter and I wrestled with this detail the most. Quite honestly, we just weren't sure how much we were willing to pay somebody to stand up front and play music from a laptop or Ipad at our reception.

All we kept thinking was, "We could do that for way cheaper."

Well, my mom encouraged us to "just check out" a DJ and see what kind of vibes we got. We met with a DJ last week and ya'll.... He. Is. Awesome! He's able to play all of the songs we are requesting for a price that other DJ's cannot compete with.

It really does help to know people. Because the DJ is good friends with the reception venue owners, and because he has done multiple events there, he was able to cut us a deal. I love me a good deal! We were instantly drawn to his vibrant personality - he's always smiling!

Just to give ya'll an idea of what type of music we're requesting (these are just a few of many on our list)...

source: Google

As for mine and Hunter's song for our first dance, we will be dancing to the song titled "My Kind of Woman/My Kind of Man" by Vince Gill and Patty Loveless. Do yourself a favor and go listen to the song on YouTube. I grew up listening to Vince Gill and a few years ago, my dad had this particular song playing over our speakers by the pool. Hunter immediately said, "If we get married, I want this to be our song. It's so good!" Little did he know, it is one of my most favorite songs by Vince Gill. It's funny how things work out, isn't it?

We're very excited, and relieved, that this detail is behind us. And that we actually were so blown away by this man's kindness to help us out that we just couldn't say no. So my advice to anybody looking/considering/questioning a DJ?

Find somebody that instantly clicks with you and your fiance. Hunter and I feel like that because we were able to relate on many things with the DJ, because we know mutual people, and because the guy is just a stand-up kind of man, it really helped make our decision easy.

Looks like we can check this task off of our wedding to-do list!

I don't know about you! But I'm feeling... 26!

The number 26 doesn't ring as nicely as Taylor Swift's 22 song but hey, let's roll with it!

My birthday is this Saturday and I'm turning a whopping age of 26. The last few months, I was having a slight meltdown over the fact that I'm past 25, and that much closer to 30. Not that 30's bad... I just don't know if I'm ready for all this?! (cue crazy eyes emoji)

As the days have gotten much shorter and much closer to my birthday, turning 26 is actually turning out to be quite exciting! 26 is going to be a big year for me - I can just feel it in my bones! I decided to compile a memory/wish/what I want to accomplish list for my 26th year of life.

1: First and foremost, I'm getting married this October. Duh, that's the best part yet of being 26!

2: I'm hoping to have my house in Tallahassee sold ASAP. Yes, I can dream.

3: Hunter and I are moving to Quincy in the spring of 2015 to do ministry work out there and hopefully start a family (eventually).

4: My relationship with God is the strongest it has ever been and it's only getting stronger with each passing day. I think God has some big plans for my little 26 year old self.

5: Okay, honesty moment. I don't want kids right off the bat. I know some people do, and that's yo thang. But not me or Hunter. We want to be married for a little while, get our feet planted, and really be able to experience married life... without little munchkins running around. Don't get me wrong: we both want to be parents so badly. But we both know we need to wait.

6: My baby sister will be turning 16 in my 26th year, and my sister-in-law to be will be turning 16 as well. Oh dear Jesus, save yourselves and get off the roads! My sister and Hunter's (only sister) are 2 months apart in age. Double trouble if you ask me. Or free babysitters... It's a win win.

7: A couple of my (once) big debts will be paid off in my 26th year. It's so awesome finally being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

8: We're planning on and saving up for a mission trip back to Honduras next summer so hopefully that will be done before my next birthday.

9: Ya'll, screw 25. My insurance dropped way more at the age of 26 (well technically a week before turning 26). Holla for a dolla!

10: I think this is going to be the year of babies for some of my friends. I can just feel it in my ovaries... Wait, what?? Ha! See #5 again if you thought I meant for us.

11: In addition to a couple of debts going bye-bye, Hunter and I have set up payoff goals for our first year of marriage. I'm excited to tackle these goals and hopefully blow those babies out of the water!

12: The Lord willing, this will not be the year of boyfriends for either my sister or my sister-in-law. Sorry girls. Ya'll can't start dating until you're married, it's just the rules. Also, I'm not responsible for anything Hunter says and/or does to your future little boyfriends. I'm just saying....

13: I have 2 brothers that live and work over in Jacksonville. I hope this 26th year of my life comes with good things for them as well. Maybe new jobs or a totally awesome house on the beach for me to visit frequently... Really anything is wonderful!

14: I'm only on 14?? And I'm trying to think of 26 things that will happen in my 26th year of life?? Aye aye aye...

15: I'm hoping that within my 26th year of life, that I will finally gain some stinkin weight! I know some folks are looking at me and saying, "Shut up and stop complaining about that!" Little do you know, issues with gaining weight are almost just as much, if not more, frustrating and pose certain health risks as trying to lose weight.

16: One word: rennovations. I cannot wait to get into the little house in Quincy and start doing some rennovations. I'm weird, I like to do things like that.

17: Okay, I plan on knocking out some of my bucket list items this year. I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano. Ever since I was very young, I just loved the way it sounds in music. Well, my sweet Hunter decided to take the initiative to talk to a woman in our church who plays the piano to give me some lessons. Yay!!

18: While we're on the kick of bucket lists, I'm 99.9% sure I've convinced Hunter he needs to pick up music again. He used to play the guitar, stopped for a little while, and is wanting to get back into it again. As a matter of fact, he's wanting to pick up the banjo. How stinkin cool?! The couple that plays together, stays together.

19: If you are not a hunter/huntress, just skip this number. In my 26th year of life, I want to kill a dang deer!! Last year's hunt, and the year before that, were not successful at all when it comes to deer. We had our fair share of hogs, but we're out of deer meat. And I'm tired of spending boocoo's of money at the grocery store for meat. Just saying...

20: Ya'll, I had the weirdest dream the other night. I dreamed that I became an aunt. This better not happen in my 26th year of life! Joe, Jordan, Erin, Hannah. Ya'll reading this!?

21: I know I mentioned earlier that I would like to gain some weight, in a healthy way. I also want to get back to being healthy period. For example, I want to get back into running seriously. I'm talking marathons and just running my little heart out.

22: Two words: Deep sea fishing. I've lived in Florida my whole life and never have I ever (oh we're playing that game?? Kidding...) gone deep sea fishing. Friends with boats... I'm looking at you. Make this happen. Mmkthanks.

23: More fishing in general. In my 26th year of life, I want to do more fishing. I love to fish! That's one of my fondest memories: My dad taking me out on a canoe in the lake and we'd fish for hours. Just spending time together like that was so wonderful.

24: Dang 26 has snuck up on me!

25: At the wonderful age of 26 years old, you would think I have master the art of holding my tongue and sugar coating things. Tis I have not... Maybe I'll learn how to do that when I'm 26. Maybe not. I'm not holding my breath on that one.

26: And finally.... In 26 years I have made some amazing memories with fabulous people. That's everybody from family, to friends, to coworkers, to bloggy friends, to the love of my life. I cannot begin to express the blessings ya'll are to me. God has truly given me a wonderful life, and I owe it all to Him.

Here's to 26 years of life, love, and happiness!

Making some waves

Image MapIn the last few months, whether you know Hunter and I personally in our daily lives or through this here bloggy corner, you would know that we have been experiencing changes throughout our church.

It has been a trying time that has drawn a few people much much closer to us, and sadly, has pushed some folks away. Not that it was an intentional separation, but rather separation by differences in ideas of the vision of our church.

I have expressed to many of ya'll that Hunter and I will be moving to Quincy, Florida once we are married. We still have every intention to move, and all signs are still a big flashing GO. But now we have even more of a reason to go.

Since many things have taken place over the last several months within our church walls, Hunter and I have prayed and prayed and begged for the life of our church. We have prayed for stability within the hearts of those inside those building walls; we have prayed for the leaders of our church, who are some of our closest friends; and we have prayed for God to change the hearts of many in our church to become less selfish and more selfless.

In essence, we wanted to be part of the leaders of a revolution in Quincy, Florida. A revolution that would bring hope, change, and most importantly, love to an unloved area. We wanted folks to look at our community and say, "Wow! In spite of everything these folks have been through, there is still hope there!" As things have progressed in the church, Hunter and I found that if we wanted this revolution to happen in the community, we would have to do this on our own outside the church walls.

As I've mentioned before, Quincy has some serious demons to wrestle with. Quincy comes from a long line of segregation and racial issues. It comes from a long line of the have's and the have not's. Quincy comes from a long line of folks who just want to be loved. And all we're trying to do is bring that love back. We don't want to change the way folks worship, or the type of praise music you listen to, or whatever it is.

We simply want to ensure that they are loved, and that we can spend forever in eternity together with our Father.

With all of that being said, Hunter and I are beyond excited to announce that we are partnering with some very close friends of ours to reach out to the community in Quincy, Florida. We plan on creating an environment and place that will be a haven and sanctuary for the unloved, the prostitutes, the pious, the religious, the hopeful and hopeless, the lepers, the haunted, and most importantly, the ones needing to be saved by grace.

Hunter and I cannot begin to express the joy in our hearts that we're experiencing right now. We have been praying for this for a. long. time. God has fully answered our prayers. We cannot believe how awesome God's timing is. It's impeccable!!

We are asking for your prayers in this time. Not just for us, but for our very best of friends who are leading this brigade, and have invited us to join them. We are asking for thoughts and prayers as we begin this process because the good Lord knows, we will have push-back from folks; we are going to have roadblocks along the way; and we are going to have those that shared pews with us question and judge our reasonings and motives.

Ya'll, Hunter and I have been bursting at the seams for the last several months with ideas on how to share the gospel with those that have been turned on by society. And what you need to understand is this can also be a place for people like my brothers. They can come to this place knowing that there will be no judgement for what they're wearing, what they did last Saturday night, or anything like that! It'll be a place for them to figure out where their souls are going.

Our thoughts and words are finally turning into action!! God, thank you for your guiding hand in this. Thank you for the patience on our part in seeing this through. Most importantly, thank you for calling us to this task. We won't let you down.

Thank you to our friends and family members who are behind us completely in this process. We can only hope that you can one day call this community church your church home.

Momma's Cooking: Wedding Food

So a couple of weeks ago, I very briefly mentioned a meeting with a caterer that Hunter and I had had. She was great, super sweet, and very professional. Unfortunately, her pricing was a bit high for our taste buds. We were so bummed that she wouldn't work out for us.

Then, a family friend of ours happened to stop by the house last weekend. He also happens to work for a local caterer. He happened to make a phone call to said caterer to see if she would be interested.

Hunter and I met with this wonderful woman last week and ya'll, she is perfect in every way!! We're able to get a wonderful menu for a price that is wayy less than we were expecting. God is so good!

courtesy of Cruton & Company

Cruton & Company (is that not the cutest name ever?!) will be catering our big event. Now I know ya'll wouldn't expect anything less of us fine southern folks when it comes to food so of course we're going to be having all the fixin's:
  • Fried chicken
  • Mac n' cheese
  • Southern style collard greens
  • Corn muffins
My mouth is already watering! Pair up this delish meal with a choice of sweet tea, lemonade, water, beer, or wine and we're all set for the night.

This Monday, I am so so so grateful that we were able to find a caterer who has a wonderful heart, an eye for details, and can cook some good southern comfort food.

Sooo who all's coming to the wedding?!

It's a beautiful day just to be alive!

Image MapHoly moly ya'll! It's stinkin Friday! I'm so excited to be linking up today with some of my favies in recapping this past week and all the many little adventures we had.

We've had quite the busy week.

ONE: Hunter and I met with a caterer earlier this week and Oh. Em. Geeee!!!! I'm not sharing any details here but you'll just have to stop back by on Monday for me to spill dem beans. Naturally, this good news would do well to go under a #gratefulheartmonday moment.

TWO: Hunter and I also met with a DJ this week and just like the previous deal... I can't spill dem beans right now! I want to keep ya'll thirsting for more, duh. Check back next week to see how that whole deal went down. Just note, this is one of the most stressful deets I've had to deal with. You'll understand more next week.

THREE: Hunter and I (we've been doing of lot of this togetherness lately... Is this real life?!) had dinner with some amazing friends last night.

Hunter has grown up with both of these fine folks almost his entire life. I met Spenser (the girl) through my brother when they were dating eons ago. She is very much like a sister to me and we're all still very close to her. Langley, or Bubba as we affectionately call him, will be one of Hunter's groomsmen. Bubba is also in the military and has been away on training (and will be leaving again soon) so it was so awesome to catch up with them.

FOUR: This past week has brought a lot of changes in our church life and we are more than excited for what is to come in the next few months, and even years, for the small town of Quincy. As things continue to come to light, I will surely keep you fine folks up to speed on the doings in our life. But just continue to pray for us as we step into new beginnings.

FIVE: Looking ahead this weekend, I'm so excited to be traveling to good ole Columbus, GA with my dad and Hunter to spend Saturday with my dad's side of the family. See, we had plans to go to the beach. But then I found out this awesome 90 year old grandma of mine is throwing herself a birthday party (it's my party and I'll cry if I want to). And we had to be there!!

Got any big plans this weekend guys?

3 Southern Gals Link-Up + Our First Date

**To participate in this link-up, please visit Cat @ Yes Deer's page or Tela @ Sweet Southern T's page to join in. Due to technical malfunctions, the link-up has been removed from this blog. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

For being a full week after a short week last week, I have to say that it is keeping up the pace and flying right on by! I guess it helps to have busy days and many big changes coming in our lives - more on that next week.

Thursdays are always fun for me because I can spend a few moments looking back on some fond memories! Some are more fond than others, like mine and Hunter's first date. Ya'll, I was not the nicest person but don't hate me just yet! I'll explain...

A little over 3 years ago, in the month of June 2011, my brother and his very cute friend were staying at my parents house over the weekend to study and take the motorcycle course for the endorsement on their license. This cute friend and I struck up small conversations, just talking about their plans for the weekend, I was taking exams at the time for school, the weather. Ya'll know, small talk.

I thought nothing of it again (other than he was so stinkin cute!) until later that week. My brother used to race motocross and this cute friend had always wanted to see a race. So the following weekend my brother had a race scheduled and I felt it only necessary to invite this cute friend. I decided to give him my number for him to contact me so that once he got to the race, he could find us since my brother wouldn't have his phone on him.

Well that week leading up to the race, cute friend had asked me to spend some time with him a couple of times. I politely declined his offers and, ya'll, my honest to God reason was because I truly thought he had a girlfriend. I thought, "He is way too nice and kind of a person to not have a girl on his arm. I'm not going to be his fling!!" Oh how little did I know.

I finally sat down with my brother and asked him about this cute friend. I found out he was a bit younger than me - that's right ya'll, I'm a cougar (and proud of it!) - but he was also single. My brother encouraged me to give him a chance.

Sadly, my brother ended up not being able to race that weekend. But cute friend still had my numba. And I had remembered what my brother said and his blessing. So to make up for being such a meanie and turning him down constantly, I told him I would love to hang out with him that Friday night... Just as friends. Or so I thought.

He came and picked me up, took me to a movie that I had been wanting to see, and we honestly spent the rest of the night talking into the wee hours and learning sooo much about each other. That night, I realized talking to him was like talking to my best friend. He was so easy to talk to and so so kind.

He did try to hold my hand that night (in a very sweet way - he knew I had been through hell and back with my last relationship) but I had to be a big ole butt and not hold his hand. Actually, I kept scooting my hand away from his to see if he would work for it. You ain't gonna get it that easy son! Ha!

Yes, I did eventually hold his hand. I was just so blown away by his kindness and genuine nature.

I can remember that night like it was 5 minutes ago - what he wore, what we talked about, the songs we listened to and laughed at. I had no idea that that night would be my last first date.

And it was the best last first date I could have ever asked for!
